Everyone should be prescribed Spoon Fed! 📖🍊
Spoon Fed by Tim Spector certainly provides food for thought! The introduction describes how our relationship with food is shaped by social, economical, and political systems. It unpicks conventional sources of food knowledge, from government recommendations to advertisements, and healthcare professionals to family and friends. Spector brings awareness to a handful of big corporations that he believes have monopolised the food industry and manipulated consumers. He reports that these companies fund the majority of food research, and influence health officials and guideline committees to disseminate biased and misleading information.
The subsequent chapters take a critical look at 23 common food myths. Spector uncovers the flawed studies and outrageous lack of trusted science behind what we already ‘know’ about food. Whilst some arguments lack nuance and diversity of references, there is a clear theme throughout: challenge what you have been fed to believe! For me, the most powerful concept taken from this book is personalised nutrition. What works for one person may not for another. The effects of food on the mind and body can differ substantially from one person to the next, depending on your unique mix of gut microbes and the chemicals that they produce.

If you pick up this illuminating book, be prepared to rethink your beliefs about food and change up your next grocery shop!
